Violence Erupts In JNU; 16 Injured In Clash Over Non-Veg Food; Case Filed

New Delhi: A violent clash erupted between two groups of students in the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus, after which the Delhi Police lodged an FIR in connection with the confrontation.

The brawl allegedly took place over non-vegetarian food being served in the hostel mess on the occasion of Ram Navami. The two sides involved in the clash were Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).

The situation in the campus was in disarray on the evening of April 10 and the turmoil resulted in at least sixteen students from both sides getting injured.

Members of JNUSU, SFI, DSF and AISA had filed a complaint against unknown students of the ABVP on the morning of April 11 and the police have said that the case was registered based on the complaint.

The FIR has been registered under Section 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 341 (wrongful restraint), 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.

Officials have informed that a further probe is underway to collect evidence and identify culprits.

Manoj C, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest), has said that ABVP members have implied that they will also be filing a complaint on April 11. The DCP added that necessary appropriate legal action will be taken if the complaint is filed.

Meanwhile, the JNUSU has accused the ABVP members of not letting the students consume non-vegetarian food in the hostel mess and creating mayhem.

The ABVP reacted to these allegations by blatantly denying the charges levelled against them and instead went on to accuse their arch-rivals by claiming that the "Leftists" disrupted a puja programme organised at the hostel on the occasion of Ram Navami.

Both sides have also accused each other of pelting stones and injuring their members. The JNUSU and ABVP students held separate marches inside the university campus after the situation had cooled down.
